Myth vs. Reality
Deet and topical repellents are the only
way to prevent biting flies. Wrong. According to Dr. Lynn Kimsey, Director of the Bohart Museum of Entomology & Professor of Entomology at UC Davis, "Repellents aren't effective against these flies".

"I’ve coated myself in noxious poisons, pungent essential oils. I have painted nail polish on my bites, and punctured my welts with a hot needle to eliminate the no-see-um venum. I have used boiling water, vodka and vinegar to eliminate the itch. Nothing has worked till now. I no longer struggle with the endless itching, & countless red welts from bites. nomo itch... finally!
It actually works for me and my husband."

INGREDIENTS

These tiny flies commonly known as sand fleas or no-see-ums have a lot in common with mosquitos. They look like a mosquito in shape but not in size. Both must have constant moisture for their larva. And the itch from sand flies are long lasting because it takes time for the enzymes to fade; itching these bites can exacerbate the healing process.
Clients have also had success using 'nomo-itch' against mosquitos & biting black flies.

Why You?
It's nothing personal. Exposed body parts of creatures that exhale carbon dioxide (you) are what these little bugs are seeking out. Experts say that no-see-ums usually prefer nectar but the female flies seek out blood as a source of protein for their eggs. The result for humans is an aggravating itch that comes from when the flies shoot a small amount of anticoagulant to keep the blood flowing. It is our body’s allergic reaction to this anticoagulant that produces the itch and causes a welt. No-see-ums live up to their name, they are approx.1-3 mm in length and you probably will never see them coming, but you can be sure you will feel them. The vicious little insects are skilled at slipping up into your clothing and can actually bite through thin clothing. People who are extra sensitive may suffer the agony of the itching and bites for as long as two weeks. No-see-ums and biting flies are not specific to only tropical regions but they are found near most water ways.
